Product Review: McDonald's Fruit & Maple Oatmeal
First off, is this stuff available where you are? The reason I'm asking is because being in "America's heartland," the midwest is often a "testing ground" for restaurant items and new products by major manufacturers.
Well if it is available, you should try it. First things first. There are two versions (that I saw.) Fruit and Maple Oatmeal with brown sugar or without. 7 points or 6 points, suit your fancy. I didn't see the points listed in my iPhone WW app, nor was it in my Dottie's iPhone app, and just as I was about to search online, I noticed the handy dandy nutritional information for both ON THE SIDE OF THE CONTAINER. Sweet!
Briefly, here's what I'll tell you. It was filling! Hooray! Fruit in my oatmeal? Do you mean just a smattering along the top? No. There was actually fruit all up in my oatmeal. In the first bite. In my last bite. And in all the bites in between. Apples, cranberries (craisins), and raisins. And the maple? It wasn't an overpowering maple, but subtle. Just enough flavoring to compliment the fruit and not make me berate myself about my inability to eat grown-up food. I'm glad I didn't order it with the brown sugar. For one, that is something that would likely be sprinkled on top--which is never enough--and two, I probably wouldn't ever want it again without the sugar.
Ok, so how much oatmeal do you get? A lot. I'd say about 1 cup, maybe a little more. Could I make this at home? Probably. But convenience is a great factor here, too. I bought it by my girls' school, then traveled 20 minutes to work (with the occasional illegal text and FBing while driving), parked, walked a block to work in 25-degree weather, turned my computer on, chatted for a few minutes, THEN ate. And it was still warm. How awesome is that?

might wanna take a look at that!
Interesting article, very timely—thank you for sharing. However, I would like to think that most people aren’t going to McDonald’s expecting fresh food and nutrition-abounds. It’s fast food. Just like other overly processed foods, such as diet soda and frozen dinners. Eating less of these, while fitting as much fresh food into your diet as possible is the goal. However, there are occasions when fast food is convenient. Plus, in comparison to McDonald’s other breakfast menu items, the Fruit and Maple Oatmeal is healthy.
You might have noticed I mentioned in my original post about a disdain for “grown up” food. The author pretty much hit it right on the head that Quaker Instant Oatmeal is hardly oatmeal. Well, in my tastebud’s book…THAT is oatmeal. There is no way in the world I will eat straight up oatmeal or Cream of Wheat or any other boiled lump of hay. (Hurl! Hurl!)
It’s funny that the author mentions how easy it is to make your own healthier version at home. Good for him! But in my house, I get up at 4:30am just so I can get to the gym by 5am. I’m home by 6:50ish, so that I can shower, dress, make my lunch, and lunches for my two girls in school (pre-K and 1st grade), who have two totally different appetites and tastes. I have bookbags to check, kids to get dressed, long curly hair to get fixed, get them fed, teeth brushed, shoes on (you might not believe the drama that entails), winter coats, hats scarves and mittens to put on, a 35-minute drive to school, with another 20-minute drive to work. Sometimes, I don’t get to my own breakfast. Sometimes, I make it to eat in the car and leave it on the counter in the rush to get out of the house on time. Convenience, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder.
Now if I’m in a pinch and need to buy my breakfast somewhere, I could go to Subway for their healthier breakfast lineup, but that means I have to park. And in Chicago, that means I probably have to pay. No thank you.
Again, thank you for sharing the link, it provides another valuable viewpoint with some good points to keep in mind. However, I stand by my product review, emphasis on the word MY.
:)
