New York City subway likely out for 4 to 5 days: mayor

(Reuters) - New York City's subway is likely to be out of service for another four to five days after monster storm Sandy, Mayor Bloomberg said on Tuesday.

The mayor said at a press conference that the city was hoping to resume limited bus service on Tuesday and full bus service on Wednesday.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said at a separate press conference that all bus fares would be suspended on Tuesday.

New York City experienced 23 fires during the storm, with a severe one in Breezy Point, Queens, that burned more than 80 houses.

Throughout New York state, 15 people died in connection with the storm, which touched down in New Jersey late on Monday, Cuomo said.

Hourly weather forecast for downtown Chicago...race starts at 6:30, and with any luck I will cross the start line by 7. It could be MUCH worse...this isn't horrible.

Long Run stepback week meets progress

So this past weekend's long run was a stepback week, just 1 week before my first half marathon of the season. And yes, I'm a bit nervous, but I've put in the miles, so I should be fine. This damn HEAT... :( Anyhoooo...

So I was up for 7 miles on Sunday. Woke up a bit late, as you know I like to get an early 5am start, but ended up getting out there right at about 6am. I started off kinda fast and ya know what? It felt good, so i shrugged it off and figured it'd even out eventually.

Here's a breakdown of my run:

Mile 1--11:12.13

Mile 2--11:10.06

Mile 3--11:26.24

Mile 4--11:11.13

Mile 5--11:05.32

Mile 6--11:22.25

Mile 7--11:07.14

Total 1:18:37, pace 11:14. Too bad this wasn't a race, because that'd be a PR. So as of Monday, here's the extended forecast for this weekend's race. Damn you, Chicago! Granted, it won't be 93 degrees at the time we're running, but conditions certainly won't be good.

Well, just as I guessed yesterday...looks light that evil lightning bolt has now moved from Sunday to Saturday. Maybe I've missed my calling? Let's see what tomorrow brings. If I could get that low of 62 down to 59....(long slow whistle.) I know, I'm asking WAY too much of our already balmy summer. Loving every minute of it!

Ok wait...NOW look at Sunday. It went from what I would call rain in the p.m. to rain all day. Rain? Fine. Lightning while running along the lakefront with nary a tall building to defer lightning strikes? Ahhh, NO. We'll see...maybe there's a trend with the seven day forecasts and the rain will move from Sunday morning to Saturday night. And then Saturday night to all day Sunday, and then when Friday gets here it will actually rain all day Friday instead. Come on, Jerry! Work with me!

Rock N Roll Half Marathon WEATHER WATCH, not Weight Watchers, for all you obsessed people like myself. But never fear, weather watching is an obsession, too. So here we are, 5 days out:



So let's see...62 degrees in the pitch black middle of the night means once we hit Lake Shore Drive and leave the shade of the downtown buildings, it'll be at least 70. Could be much worse. But with all this fabulous non-summer weather we've been having, I was hoping for lower temps. I mean, we've had a few glorious Saturdays when we ventured out at 60 degrees.

Anyhoo, the RNR WW countdown is on.

p.s. This is weatherman Jerry Taft's forecast. He rocks. Mainly so because he reminds me of my high school biology (and advanced biology) teacher, Mr. Purcell, who was the BEST. He was so cool, and I learned a lot, caught my hair on fire with a bunsen burner in class, and when his dog died, he told us and then proceeded to cry in front of us. It was an awkward moment, yes, but will forever be etched in my mind. MR. PURCELL WHERE ARE YOU? I promise not to let my disected cat muscles dry out again!
