An attorney biking to work was struck and killed by a semi truck on the Near North Side this morning when he swerved to avoid an open car door, authorities said.

Neill Townsend, 32, was in the southbound lane on Wells Street in front of Walter Payton High School, just north of Oak Street, when the driver of a Nissan Altima swung open the door just before 9 a.m., police said.

Townsend veered away and fell underneath the wheels of the truck, which was hauling a flat-bed trailer, police said.

Townsend, of the 1500 block of North LaSalle Drive, was dead at the scene, according to the medical examiner's office.

The man who opened the door was cited for a traffic violation, according to News Affairs Officer Robert Perez. The man's name was not released.

This was inaccurate information by the way. Just letting you know.

Well thanks for clearing THAT up...with providing absolutely nothing to support what you say. ??? These kinds of accidents happen a lot, regardless of whether or not the Trib for every detail right for this specific story. I have a friend who got "doored" before and flipped over the door. Suffered blinding headaches for a year. Have a co-worker who met a worse fate with a car door and ended up in a body cast for 3 months. This shit ain't no joke. Look before you open your car door. And I'm not anti-driver...I drive nearly 50 miles every day in the city. But I do so in awareness of others around me. Drivers, cyclists and pedestrians all need to learn to share the road. If you have more details you care to share about this specific incident, please do. -Lindy
